Chicago’s Near North Side community area, located north and east of the Chicago River, is bounded on the east by Lake Michigan and on the north by the 19th-century city limit of Chicago, North Avenue. Near North encompasses several smaller neighborhoods, including Goose Island, Cabrini Green, McCormickville, Gold Coast, Streeterville and the Magnificent Mile. Near North is also the site of Jean Baptiste Point Dusable’s original settlement. Having undergone severe gentrification since its rise from a skidrow in the 1970s, the area is now home to a mostly-affluent group of residents, high-end retailers, restaurants, theaters and boutique shops.
